Club Review :
The HiFi Club is one of the most recent additions to the Leeds' club scene, having opened in October 2000. It offers an alternative to the city's vibrant dance music scene by offering a range of DJ led and live music nights based around jazz, funk, soul and hip hop.  With a capacity of 350, the emphasis is on a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere with friendly, welcoming door and bar staff, and a cosy environment of natural brick and woodwork, with warm leather booths and cube-style seating.
The HiFi Club is owned and run by a group of people who have been influential in the Leeds nightlife scene since the early 1990s, many of them most recently at the late lamented 'Underground' club venue.

Following the demise in July 2000 of the Town & Country Club, its sister venue the Underground, and also the acclaimed Duchess of York, The HiFi Club has helped fill the gap in the live music scene in Leeds by providing a home for live jazz, reggae and hip hop bands, with regular live music sessions on Thursday evenings, Sunday daytimes, and Sunday evenings. Tuesday nights play host to a variety of diverse one-off events, including comedy, live band showcases (including the debut performance by the much-touted Leeds' based 'The Music') a recent live gospel hip hop event, and a Swing night featuring dance classes and 11-piece Swing band.  The other nights of the week play host to a number of regular weekly club nights, spanning contemporary R&B and Hip Hop, to Motown and Northern Soul, 70s Funk, reggae and Latin.

Venue manager and licensee Andy Smith says "We wanted to create the sort of club that we would love to go to ourselves. The bar staff talk to customers on first-name terms, our door staff are friendly and welcoming, unlike so many other venues, and we don't have any out-dated dress wear policies like 'no trainers'. We are also placing an emphasis on value in the club itself, for instance serving all our spirits in 35ml measures rather than the traditional 25ml that you find in most places".

According to co-owner Ed Mason "We felt that although Leeds has a really strong club scene, and a national reputation for the quality and diversity of its nightlife, there was a gap in the market for an intimate and friendly jazz and funk club."

"One of the strengths of the Leeds night life scene is that there is a strong and vibrant independent sector, which leads to a diverse and interesting range of bars and clubs. There are a lot of places owned by independent operators, who bring with them a passion and enthusiasm you don't always find with the corporates. Bars like Mojo, North Bar, Milo, and Arts Cafe Bar, and club venues such as , The HiFi Club, illustrate the originality and vitality of the Leeds scene."

Unlike many other venues, he success of the club is such that it is open 7 nights a week.

I LOVE the HiFi Club. It's the first club on my list if I want to hear quality music midweek or weekends! The Sunday Joint was a huge favourite of mine when I was a student, the perfect way to spend a relaxing afternoon after a heavy Saturday night. These days I just can't get enough of Move On Up, even though it makes me late for work on Thursday mornings.

The HiFi Club is peerless
