| he Underworld, Tucked away on Lower Briggate (next door to Break for the Border) is Oslo, an exciting new bar which rightly claims to be completely different to anything Leeds has ever seen before. From the outside it's easy to miss - just a door in a wall. Venture down the stairs however, and you'll find yourself in a wierd subterranean world, a room which appears to have been elaborately tunnelled out of sandstone rock. Suprisingly big, it's all nooks and crannies. Its passageways, split levels and minature rooms invite you to explore, and the layout makes cosy private conversation far easier than in your average wine bar. The decor is certainly unique - in fact, it's impossible to describeand I'm not going to spoil it for you by trying. Just go and take a look for yourself, I can promise you won't be disappointed. Once you've chosen your spot you can settle back and relax, as there's waited table service - a definite plus. The bar staff are friendly and they keep circulating; checking you've got everything you want, keeping your table clean and offering more drinks from a good selection of wines, bottled beers, cocktails and coffees. Theres's also a deeply tempting food menu. For just £3 or £4 a plate you can sample (amongst others) King prawns in garlic and parsley butter, Thai green salad in sweet chilli dressing or Italian sausage with tomatoes and flagelloute beans. You can even get beluga caviar and fresh oysters. Oslo is open 5pm to 2am during the week, and 5pm to 4am on Friday and Saturday. With soft, ambient music and comfortable seats, it's an ideal place to chill out after work or after clubbing. Words Absolute Leeds Magazine |
